My hope is that participants find this workshop both thought provoking and beneficial to their work. We have such an important role to play in the care of ALL birthing families. However, in this workshop, my focus is on those of us who belong to the global majority as we come with additional layers of challenges when it comes to accessing equitable and culturally respectful maternal healthcare.

Expectant parents have varying degrees of fears during pregnancy but Black & Brown bodied people often have that additional fear of being yet another maternal mortality statistic.

Communicating with compassion and with an understanding of the cultural context behind these concerns and fears helps to build trust. With trust comes mutual understanding, mutual respect and the ability to deliver and receive care that can protect against preventable harm and have a long lasting positive impact on birthing families and their babies.
