What does it mean to have a good birth? Is it a vaginal birth, a home birth? A good birth means many things to many people. Here's my take on it!
Anyone else love a good birth story?
With all the gloomy stats around Black birth, it is CRUCIAL to remember that we also have joyously positive birth experiences.
But what actually makes a birth joyous and positive? It may be different for everyone as no two people are the same and no two births are the same.
In my experience, a huge factor in achieving a positive birth experience is your relationship with your care givers (midwives, consultants etc.) during the pregnancy and birth.
Are you being heard?
It is so important that your care giver is truly listening to you and your wishes. This means they put their own personal views aside, put policies aside and truly listen to you and your wishes. Of course, it is their job to inform of you of any risks and guidelines as this is a big part of supporting you to make an informed decision. However, once you have looked over all of the information and you and your partner have made your decision, from that moment onwards they should be supporting your wishes to birth in the way that you have planned.
When your journey is full of compassion rather than combat, trust rather than mistrust and facts rather than assumptions we then have the perfect recipe for you to experience the truly joyously positive birth you deserve. You deserve to be respected, you deserve to be heard and you deserve to step into your rightful place as a beautiful Black mama in the most authentic way possible.
In my 12 years as a doula and now as founder of Black Mamas Birth Village, I’ve had the privilege of supporting many Black mamas to have FANTASTIC and JOYOUS births.
